The K.u.K. soldiers where on the Ortler front form 1915 to 1918. Also during the winter the soldiers stayed in the ice to defend the home soil against an Italian attack. Even though the front could be halted, the Austria-Hungarian Empire lost the war and South Tyrol became a part of Italy. Especially now, when the glaciers melt away, more and more relicts from this time come to our eyes.
